Seating arrangement in the classroom One of the most important factors to consider prior to the start of each lesson , is how to layout the classroom , in a way to ensure ALL students are in a position to fully engage with the activities being taught There are numerous key factors to consider , depending on the day's activities , and I will cover each point in turn , detailing the pros and cons for each Along with the desk layout for the students , the teachers position is vital , and again this will be covered in my explanations 1/ Space Every classroom will vary in size . It is therefore necessary to know where you will be conducting the day's activities . There is no point planning anything to elaborate if the room does not lend itself to how you envisage it will work 2/ Age of the students There are many factors to consider when seating the students , especially the younger class members 3/Friends - whilst they like to be sat next to the friends , which can be a positive for confidence , it can also lead to a lack of concentration if they are talking to each other rather than listening fully to the tasks being set 4/ Sex - often with the younger class members , they feel more confident sat with somebody of the same sex as themselves . Shyness of the opposite sex can often stifle the students full participation 5/Nationality and Religion - as with the above , you need to understand cultures and beliefs when seating the students Certain topics may be taboo to discuss with classmates of a different sex or faith 6/Personality - again , seating students with a similar mindset , helps to extract more information , leading to more meaningful discussions , however little knowledge of their classmates likes can encourage more drilling more points of interest Seating 1/ circles or Horseshoe By laying out the tables and chairs in these positions , with the teacher in the middle or at the open end of the horseshoe , makes the classroom feel more intimate It allows all the students to make eye contact with each their classmates , and removes the feeling that they are being talked at or dominated It is also beneficial for working in pairs or threes ( with a classmate either side of them ) without disturbing others It also prevents those less confident hiding at the back of the class , whilst the more confident are noticeable at the front These layouts gives everyone equal attention 2/ Orderly rows Certainly the most common layout for classrooms , it enables all the students to focus on the teacher or the blackboard , and if allows the teacher to move freely between all , however it does lend itself to less confident hiding away as covered previously 3/ Separate tables for group work This layout is ideal for students to be grouped together for discussions , debates , brainstorming and preparing presentations , but often space and availability can be an issue Potentially there could be available space outside the classroom for this approach , but discussion first with the school is important , so as not to disturb other classes in progress Whilst this can solve the space issue it is extremely difficult to supervise all students participation As I have set out above there are many formats to consider in layout of the classroom , and each has many advantages and disadvantages Thought and consideration need to given to ensure the full benefits are gained from whichever is chosen Sent from my iPad
