The first lesson is the most vital of all lessons because it allows the teacher to build rapport with the students and sets the tone for the rest of the class. Once a rapport is made between the teacher and the students then the students are much more willing to learn the new language. Warm up exercises and ice breakers are a good way for the teacher to build a rapport and to find out about the students' interests in order to cater the lessons to those interests. A general premade questionnaire can be used in the beginning to find out the level of the individual and allow the teacher to better serve the student's need throughout the course. Games are a good way to break the ice with a new group of students because a game gets the whole class involved and participating. A game also keeps the attention of the student focused on the teacher. It is also important to avoid using the students' own native language as much as possible. There are some situations that arise where this is unavoidable
