In addition to the information I have learned about the tenses and various grammar (I had no idea how many tenses there were in english!) and usage, I learned a lot from this course. In my grade school years, not only was I a very good student, but I also read every book I could get my hands on. This helped me to be very successful in english, grammar, spelling, and writing. It came naturally to me. However, I did not know the ‘rules' of grammar, or why something was correct. I just knew what ‘sounded good' to me. This course has taught me more than I knew in school, and more importantly, the reasons behind the ‘rules.' This will enable me to be a better teacher. And for this newly acquired knowledge, I am very grateful. I enjoyed learning how to create lesson plans. I learned to think about creating a lesson with more detail. I appreciate the information about the different stages of a lesson (Engage, Study, and Activate). This really makes lesson planning more interesting, to be able to break up the activities into portions. Also, having the different stages in a lesson ensures that all areas of learning get covered. I will use this information to create interesting and creative lesson plans for my future students! This course has helped me to think about the different types of english students that I will encounter, and their possible reasons for studying the english language. I will use this information not only to plan my lessons, but also to deal with possible discipline problems. It was helpful to learn that younger students could have a lack of interest in the course, since they are most likely only taking the course because of their parents. This could result in discipline issues! The information about possible games, activities, and resources will prove to be invaluable. As a new esl teacher, I may not have as many creative ideas for activities and games. I appreciate the numerous possibilities which have been listed in this course. I have saved this information to help me in the future! I will use this information, along with the possible resources listed, to look back on. This will enable me to be a better teacher, and to be more creative as well. The video in Unit 10 was informative. I enjoyed being able to see the differences in the two ways the teacher taught his class. The information presented in the videos was logical and obvious, but to be able to SEE the differences on the video was perfect. It really made a difference to me, to be able to see the errors in his teaching of the first class. I can think back to this video when I am teaching -- what NOT to do in my classes. I will use this information to remind myself to have an interesting Engage phase; to not talk down to my students; to walk around and check on the students' comprehension and progress; and to give each student an opportunity to speak. In closing, I would also like to add how valuable it was to have Peter as a tutor. Peter's comments were not only helpful, but were insightful and proved his knowledge of tefl. Whether telling me which parts were done well, or giving comments on how I could improve my answers, he did so in a respectful way. I want to thank him for a job well done.
