As an elementary school teacher, I have created many lesson plans in the past. However, it was through this course that I was first introduced to the engage, study and activate stages. I learned how to incorporate these stages into my lessons for english language learners to create structure, balance and flexibility. As a teacher I am always looking for new and creative ideas to add to my toolbox and appreciated the variety of activities, lesson ideas and resources offered throughout this course. This course challenged me to use my creativity to create original activities that I hope to implement in my own classes. The unit on providing feedback was very helpful, especially the section on encouraging students to communicate as much as possible during the engage and activate stages. After reading this unit I noticed a change in my teaching style. I would allow students to make mistakes without providing immediate correction during the engage and activate stage activities. It took me awhile to adjust to this style at first, but I soon noticed a positive change in my students' attitudes and participation during class. I was reminded again how important it is for the teacher to create a positive and safe environment where students feel comfortable speaking out and making mistakes. Other helpful points gained from this course included asking questions and giving instructions. I learned that it is better to call on a student after asking the question, rather than before in order to keep the entire class alert. Sometimes I would catch myself calling a student's name to answer a question before asking it and quickly changed my questioning method. The unit on giving instructions was beneficial to me because it made me more mindful of the type and length of my language used for instructions. The unit stressed the importance of using simple language, the same set of words repeatedly, along with visual cues. I have and will continue to make these a part of my instruction language. Another change in my teaching style was that I stopped asking students, “Do you understand?” after giving instructions and instead asked students to explain the directions back to me. This proved to be a much more effective way to check student comprehension. I found the unit on pronunciation and phonology to be particularly interesting. I would like to teach intonation, stress and articulation in my english classes, especially with the incoming freshman. I would like to teach my students how to understand and use the phonemic alphabet. I believe understanding and using the phonemic alphabet will improve my students' english learning abilities and overall language experience. In addition, the grammar units not only provided a good review for me, but also made me more aware of the struggles and difficulties my students face when learning english grammar. These units reminded me of the complexities of the english language and challenged me to find ways to effectively explain and demonstrate grammatical points to my students. I will strive to provide fun and interesting activities for my students to learn grammar using explanations that are accessible and relevant. Lastly, I will strive to be a compassionate educator who is aware of her students' interests and needs. As an educator of english language learners I will make it my goal to provide authentic, communicative learning experiences for my students. This course has provided me with the opportunity to grow as a professional and has increased my passion for teaching. I am excited to incorporate my newly learned knowledge into my classroom!
