Being from the united states, I sometimes take for granted that my native tongue is english because growing up I failed to recognize how important this language is outside of my country. Only when I got to college did my view of the english language began to change as I met many exchange students who were very eager and as well as struggling to learn this international language. For the most part, they wanted to learn english so they can communicate with their english speaking friends or enhanced their career prospects back in their home country. The english language itself came from the U.K., and later began to take importance due to the expansion of its empire. However, the global popularity of english only began to take off after the united states emerged from WWII as the world's superpower. There are about seven countries in the world these days whose official language is english. While it's not an official language in most countries, it's a language that's most often taught in school as a foreign language, above all other foreign languages such as french or spanish. As a result, english has become the lingua franca of the 21st century. english is not only widely used as a mean of communication these days, but also a requirement for some people that are trying to get into a university. Universities from english-speaking countries usually required applicants to pass a certain exams like IELTS or TOefl in order to enter those universities. For most of those people, knowing english can be a deciding factor of their future and career. Therefore, failing to pass the exam due to a lack of understanding of the english language can hinder and prevent them from entering the right university and be successful in life. The advent of computers and the internet only further accelerated the usage of english worldwide. The internet is a good example because it allows people to communicate worldwide at light-speed without having to be at a certain location. Most websites and technology companies are based in the united states, and therefore english would be the most commonly used language. It would be very difficult for those without basic knowledge of the english language to use a computer and surf the internet because all keyboards are based on the roman alphabets, and most computer language as well. I believe most Native-english speakers take for granted of how lucky they are because they were born/raised in an english-speaking country. This gives them a huge advantage in the global economy because most multi-national companies around the world require their workers be fluent in english in order to be hired. Moreover, there are many jobs around the world that seek out Native-english speakers to teach efl/esl to students of Non-native speaker. The demand is very high and job opportunity is great for Native-english speakers due english being the global language as it is now. It has become an important tool in this competitive world because being fluent in it allows people to attain professional success in their life and gain a competitive advantage over those that doesn't know the language.
