A teacher has many roles in the classroom from organizing the learning content to creating and establishing the environment to building rapport and encouraging participation from all students. In order to succeed as a teacher an individual must be aware of all of these aspects of their role. In addition there are a variety of learners with a variety of motivations for learning english. It behooves the teacher to understand these learners and their motivations for learning as well as their level of learning. Teaching a beginning student advanced material would be a waste time as would be teaching an advanced student elementary material.
