Unit 15 covered the essentials of assessment and the different kinds of assessments and their purpose. A student should start by taking a placement test so that he or she can be placed in a class at the right level. Next a student would take a diagnostic test at the beginning of the course so that the student and teacher can know what areas are strengths and weaknesses and plan lessons accordingly. Next during the duration of the class a student may take several progress tests that can be informal or formal depending on the teacher. At the end of the class a student may take an achievement test for a grade. The student could also take a practice test and prepare for an external examination. An external examination would allow the student to earn a certificate in which to be admitted for work or for school in another country.
