I have personally gained more respect for those in the teaching/education profession. I have gained a sense of personal accomplishment and deeper awareness that my decision to teach the english language is one of the best decisions I have made. As I studied the various units within this online course, the following are some of the “stand out” information I have learned and how I plan to put those foundational principles, tools and lessons into action. This course was overall an impactful experience for me. In reading about the qualities of a good teacher and the various roles involved with teaching, I learned that it is important to ensure that I create the kind of learning environment that will ensure students find learning as fun, creative and interactive as possible. I've learned that practical ways I can achieve this include building a rapport with my students and choosing to learn about them and their interests. Most of the time, it's as simple as asking the right questions and maintaining a positive and open attitude that is inclusive toward all students, not exclusive to just a few. Being a quality teacher, can also be achieved by making sure I conduct the appropriate needs analysis and various methods of testing and evaluation of students to ensure I know their current language levels. It will be important and imperative for me to get involved in choosing the texts and various materials that will go into a given lesson where possible. This will help me to teach students the english language curriculum in the right way. This will also be advantageous in creating lessons that cater to the specific needs and interests of my students. It will also be important for me know the material I am teaching thoroughly. Being able to teach my students from a place of passion, sincerity and true understanding of the material will help to build their confidence in my abilities and knowledge. Additionally, I have learned the importance of allowing students their opportunities during each days lesson to openly communicate and express as much of the language that they've learned. To create a balanced learning experience, I should not be doing all of the talking. I've learned that it's necessary to engage the students. Practical ways of doing this for me will be to ensure that every stage of the lesson builds on the other. From the engage to the study to the activate stages of each lesson, I will include discussions, games, group and pair work and exercises that relate to the learning objectives of the day. This way, students can understand and retain what they are learning. Throughout this online course, I've learned the importance of celebrating my students' achievements as they learn, as well as how to be gentle, supportive, respectful and encouraging when providing assistance or making corrections. Ultimately, putting the principles I've learned into action will also help to create a learning environment where students are not apprehensive about asking questions or intimidated to express an idea.
