Strategies for Teaching english Language Learners (ELLs) Learning to speak a second language in a new country can be difficult and overwhelming. Some ELLs have had very little exposure to english and western culture, while others have had a lot through television and the Internet. Ells cannot be expected to perform as regular english students. Even though they communicate in class and speak fluently, they may not be at the same level of language proficiency as their native speaking peers. english is acquired on two different levels: on a social communicative level and cognitive academic level. teachers need strategies for language instruction that help their ELLs be successful on these different levels as their proficiency progresses. To help their ELLs be successful teachers not only need to be mindful of these different stages to adjust their strategies for language instruction, but must also apply some general strategies for second language learners. There are 4 stages of speech production that require different strategies to help the students be successful. These stages are: 1. Pre-Production 2. Early Production 3. Speech Emergence 4.
