This course has been a great learning experience for me. It has refreshed and sharpened my grammatical knowledge, illuminated for me the challenges of teaching english to non-native speakers, and given me a solid framework with which to approach the task. It has also excited me about the process of teaching, and given me some confidence in my ability to become a good teacher. With the grammar, I saw how important it is for a native speaker to stay sharp on the subject, since it is easy to take much of it for granted. Explaining the nuances and variations of one’s language to someone who did not grow up with it requires a strong understanding of the fundamentals, and that is something I feel I should continue to study and review throughout my career as a teacher. As for the challenges and skills needed for teaching, I perhaps learned the most. The course had a comprehensive vision and strategy for teaching, while at the same time giving one a broader sense of the philosophy of teaching in itself. From this, I feel I have a solid point to work from. My intention with my first classes is to take the materials and requirements for my first job and outline my full first course. I want to make sure I have enough visual and realia and authentic language materials so I will gather what I can in advance so I can begin to build a resource to draw on, depending on each class’ needs and interests. I plan to build a file of games and exercises and worksheets as well, from books and websites and the materials provided in this course. The wider a selection of resources I have, the more tools I will have to meet each individual courses needs. In class I know I need to focus on and gain proficiency with communicating with simple effective language, I need to listen to the students, and be sensitive and aware of what their experience is so that I can help them meet or exceed their expectations in their language learning endeavors. I can only do that though, if I am an effective communicator, and I keep the class exciting and engaging throughout.
