Unit 11 has taught me the importance of teaching receptive skills in detail. Reading and listening are both equally important receptive skills. The unit said that there are two main reasons we read or listen to things and those are for a purpose or for entertainment. When listening or reading it is important to know that they are a dependent on us using our minds to understand and process information through our pre-existing knowledge. I found this to be important because when engaging students that will give me the opportunity to see what they already know and what I can build on. Gaining an understanding of how we read and listen made it easier to understand the ways to teach these receptive skills. I need to create interesting lesson plans that reach all the students so that it makes their learning more pleasurable. The lesson plan that was given about Elvis was a good example of using pre-existing knowledge to create an interesting and effective lesson plan.
