Elizaveta Pachina Teaching Ideas There are always struggles and problems with learners of English as a foreign language in different countries. Cambodia is no exception. The Cambodian educational system has undergone many changes in its history. The Pol Pot genocidal regime between 1975-1979 forced the educational system of the nation to collapse. After a long prohibition of the English language and the end of the cold war, the government and people of Cambodia chose the English language to be the second language to communicate and do business. In 1986 the ban from teaching English was lifted. Since it is such a relatively new language in the everyday educational system, learners of English can have problems understanding and learning the language. English is one of them. It is spoken and written by billions of people around the world. Having traveled in eight countries myself, I was surprised to have seen how commonplace it was for countries to translate directional signs in both the official language and in English. A student’s mastery of the English language, or in any language, can be a difficult journey to venture. Therefore, this essay will explore what factors may motivate a student to learn English. Elizaveta Pachina Teaching Ideas Music is something that nearly everyone in the world enjoys. Music is a universal language. No matter what language you may speak, music is in every corner of the world and every culture. It is one of the many things that can unite people of all places and backgrounds. Because of this, I think music is essential in an English classroom. Especially in a multilingual or multicultural classroom, the students can relate to one another not only through their English knowledge but also through the fact that they like listening to music. If a song is in English, the students might not understand it. However, students can still enjoy a catchy melody or even just the instrumentals behind it while still gaining some kind of knowledge and practice by hearing the...  [Read more]

Jon ITTT Alumni Experiences My teaching experience started back in 1988 where I was working for a company called Bryco Windows. They are a UPVC window and door manufacturer where my position was Sales Trainer. My job was to teach new staff and train them to understand the sales process and how to close the sale. This was a hard job to do as a salesman as the sales people got a lot of knock backs (no sale). Part of my job as sales trainer was to keep them motivated. Sometimes this got very hard with some sales people and many people left. The employee turnover was very high as not many people actually could master it. I worked there for four years in this position and met some really good people who did very well. This post was written by our TEFL certification graduate James M. Then I...  [Read more]

Elizaveta Pachina Teaching Ideas Young learners and adults have different needs and goals in the classroom. Young learners want to be engaged and have rapidly changing activities while adult learners will enjoy a more serious classroom setting. Please note that this blog post might not necessarily represent the beliefs or opinions of ITTT. If a teacher is teaching classes with young learners, visual cues are very important. Many young learners are not able to read at all or can read very little, so young learners need to be using material that is picture based. Motivation is important because it keeps the students invested in the class and learning the class material.
