What type of a TEFL teacher do I want to be? I have learned from Unit 19 Teaching Special Groups there are different types of classes. They are Teaching Beginners, Teaching Individual Students, Teaching Children, Business English / English for Specific Purposes (ESP), and Monolingual and the Multilingual Class. Many to choose from and I hope during my teaching career I will be exposed to all of them. But, if I had my choice I would pick Business.
In this essay, I will define what is Business English, describe the types of clients and their needs, program planning, and things to consider. My essay will be primarily based on what I learned in Unit 19 and from internet research. A lot of what I will be writing... [Read more]

The fastest-spreading language in human history is English! It is spoken at a useful level by some 1.75 billion people worldwide says an online article from the Harvard Business Review in 2015. In almost every country companies need to act international or do have contact with clients and employees with different backgrounds. The pressure of a company to deal with in its business, with the support of its employees, on a common language is extremely high to resist this global market next to its competitors.

I have been teaching English in Ukraine for over five years. I started at Greenwich school as a native speaker, but there was not much training involved. I was in the travel industry, so I wanted to fill up some of the free time I had earlier each day. My work with Canada was mainly after 4 pm each day. After teaching part-time, I began to enjoy it, so when more and more companies and students needed me, I filled up fast.

Like it or not, ready or not, English is the global language of business. Globalization in business is widespread both in market globalization and production globalization. More importantly, more and more multinational companies are mandating English as the common corporate language—Airbus, Daimler-Chrysler, Fast Retailing, Nokia, Renault, Samsung, SAP, Technicolor, and Microsoft in Beijing, to name a few.
This corporate strategy of adopting a global language policy has also increased the demand for a specialized English teacher: The Business English Teacher. Believe it or not, a Business English teacher does not need to be an expert businessman or businesswoman. Most of the language needed for business... [Read more]

As a former teacher of English as a foreign language, I have some experience teaching business English. Majority of my classes were for general English conversation. However, as I continued teaching, my workload increased to include a few business-focused classes. At first, I was intimidated and nervous about teaching these students. Did I have enough knowledge about business to teach them? Would I have the information they needed? After a lot of preparation and a few lessons, I realized that business classes are not much different than regular English classes and I need not know much about business to be a successful business English teacher.

Teaching “Business English” is an interesting context for an English teacher. A lot of teachers are concerned about teaching in this context because they think that they need detailed knowledge or experience about business. Even though a knowledge of business is useful, it is not the number one skill or ability a teacher should have. On the contrary, there is nothing to fear as essentially you are still an English teacher and your students (clients) often have the business knowledge they need, but can just not express themselves in English. So it is all about adapting and taking your normal teaching approach from the general English class, and making it work in the business context. A teacher should remember that... [Read more]

As time goes on, the world is becoming more globalized. Learning English is a requirement in most countries and it is affecting how information is spread in the world. What this means for current students is that, most likely, English will become a part of their career at one point or another. When we think about all the companies in the world and how they have spread globally, employers are looking for talented multi-lingual more than ever.

There is no one way to teach English online, there are programs where the teacher doesn’t have to do much aside from showing up given that the lessons are pre-planned like with Qkids and VIPKid, which I’ll call company-centered programs because the company sets the curriculum. While other programs, such italki, and Palfish, rely on teacher-created lesson plans, which may be more stressful for the teacher, but ultimately are a great boon for the students they teach as the lessons can be tailored to each student, I’ll refer to them as teacher-centered programs because of that. Each has its merits and I will discuss some of them here for you now.

The business world has already gone global, and English has become the lingua franca among companies and meetings. However, being a teacher in a developing country such as Argentina can be quite a challenge when teaching English for specific purposes. That is because there is not a high demand for learning the L2 in companies, and if there is so, the working conditions are not very favorable. The lack of formation, the setting, the group, the working hours, and the material available are some of the issues that teachers may review when offered a kind of job like that. So, what options are there for teachers with little and sometimes no experience at all in teaching business English?

In this blog post, we will discuss some of the more common problems that can be associated with the teaching of Business English classes. They are some of the things that we need to be aware of as teachers about our learners.
Firstly we need to bear in mind that very often our students will have been working all day before they come to their English classes and so our students are going to be tired. We need to be aware of that and we need to take account of it within our lessons. It is unreasonable to expect full attention and engagement from our students under these circumstances.
Secondly if the students come to us from a particular department in a company which is very often... [Read more]

Working as an ESL teacher can be difficult if you live in a Western country and you haven't undertaken a certain path during your university studies. As far as Italy is concerned, if you want to teach in a public school, you need to hold at least a Master's Degree in pedagogical studies and/or educational sciences. No matter how good an English speaker you are, you are required to own those specific degrees. If you want to teach in a private school, you have to take into account the fact that they prefer to hire native speakers – which is totally licit, to a certain extent. In addition to that, if you have no experience whatsoever in teaching in front of a class, you are basically... [Read more]

When I hear the term role, I often think of a theatrical production. Which role is so and so playing? “What has to do they wear?” is another question for what the teacher does in and out of the classroom.
Regardless of the term, I believe the answers are numerous. The teacher must fill many functions. Most of these roles will stay the same regardless of the age of the students, whether they are clients in a mandatory English class paid for by their company or a classroom full of elementary students in a US public school setting.

Teaching is a very enjoyable job and can also be highly rewarding. I had the opportunity to learn that by having an eighteen-month religious experience in which I shared all my beliefs with the people in Ecuador. After returning home, I realized that I wanted to keep having that feeling in my life. I wanted to teach people. Now, the question was what to teach. My teaching experience started back in 1988 where I was working for a company called Bryco Windows. They are a UPVC window and door manufacturer where my position was Sales Trainer. My job was to teach new staff and train them to understand the sales process and how to close the sale. This was a hard job to do as a salesman as the sales people got a lot of knock backs (no sale). Part of my job as sales trainer was to keep them motivated. Sometimes this got very hard with some sales people and many people left. The employee turnover was very high as not many people actually could master it. I worked there for four years in this position and met some really good people who did very well.
