I Am Not Very Happy In Spanish

Elizaveta Pachina Alumni Experiences For the past several years I have been working for a non-profit company that provides high-quality daycare and preschool education for financially disadvantaged children. The population we serve is diverse, but the majority of families in our particular centers are Latino. Although I am not employed in a classroom teaching position, I have a great deal of contact with the children and with their parents. Part of my responsibility is to conduct an intake interview with the parents to explain the policies of the school, and to do a health history of the child before he enters. These meetings take about forty minutes when the parent speaks English, and an hour or more if I need the help of a translator. This post...  [Read more]

Elizaveta Pachina Alumni Experiences As the mother of a 3-year-old son, born in Spain to British parents, I have found that singing the same song in both English and Spanish has helped my son become bilingual. This post was written by our TEFL certification graduate Alessandra Fay B. Please note that this blog post might not necessarily represent the beliefs or opinions of ITTT. Provided it is done in a fun and interesting way, James appears to retain information much quicker when presented to him in song form. For example, we sing the days of the week, first in English and then in Spanish, both to the same tune and he enjoys repeating these over and over. I have also used the tune from the song “if you are happy and you know it” to teach him...  [Read more]

Elizaveta Pachina Alumni Experiences According to the Oxford Dictionary, motivation is 'the desire or willingness to do something.' On the one hand, most of the students who take a foreign language course should have the desire and enthusiasm to learn and develop their skills in that second language; for future career prospects, travel purposes, to study or live in a country whose local language is different from their mother tongue, etc. On the other hand, a few of them won’t have any interest at all and they will attend the lessons with neither intention nor motivation. This post was written by our TEFL certification graduate Ruben Garrido G. Please note that this blog post might not necessarily represent the beliefs or opinions of ITTT....  [Read more]

Linda Dunsmore Alumni Experiences Stepping onto my flight from Miami to Santiago, Chile, I was confident in my Spanish skills. After all, I had taken nearly seven years of Spanish classes in middle and high school. However, when I landed I found, not only did I not understand 80% of what my host family said to me, they couldn’t understand me either. Over the course of my two months there, I came to appreciate the significance of slang in understanding and mastering a language. Even though slang words and usage can vary tremendously throughout the English speaking world, this is not an excuse to avoid introducing slang in the classroom. Being able to identify and understand some common slang words and phrases will help English learners reading...  [Read more]

Mark Crocker TEFL Information Alumni Experiences When I looked at the choices of where and how to take a TEFL course, there were two factors that played into my decision-making process. These factors were time and money. I needed to find the quickest, most convenient way to take a TEFL course, and at the same time stay within my budget. And for these reasons, taking the online option was clearly the best way to go for me. This post was written by our TEFL certification graduate David K. I had to find the best way to finish a TEFL course, as fast as possible, so that I could start to use it to make some money while I was traveling. Having plenty of free time, and being able to work at my own pace, made the online offering the...  [Read more]

Elizaveta Pachina Alumni Experiences “Why do I have to take a TEFL course?” I asked this question when my daughter suggested to me to enroll in this course. Having decided to say goodbye to my current job as an international homeroom teacher, I am now embarking on a new journey of applying abroad for a teaching position at an international school. Thanks to the Americans who defeated our Spanish colonizers way back the 19th century, they brought their educational system to the Philippines. Ever since I started school, I have been taught the American way using the English language as the medium of instruction. However, even if I am learned in English, I have to get a TEFL course to prove my competence in the English language. So here we are....  [Read more]

As the state capital of Arizona, Phoenix is a vibrant city that provides the perfect base for completing a tefl/tesol course. Due to its location in the Sonoran Desert, the city of Phoenix enjoys a warm and dry climate throughout the year. As well as the pleasant weather, the city is also ideally situated for exploring this fascinating region that is home to some of the most beautiful national parks in the country including the mighty Grand Canyon. Don’t worry if you are not keen on outdoor adventures as you will find plenty of other things to enjoy in this modern and lively city. Although the area has been home to Native Americans for over 2000 years, the modern city of Phoenix has a relatively short history. Founded in the 1860s, the city was small and mostly overlooked until it...  [Read more]

Federico Riva Teaching Ideas Teaching English in a foreign country has become very popular in the last five years. The reason is that many people want to travel the world and explore the cultural differences from different countries. The younger generation can't travel the world because they simply don’t have the money to travel and can’t afford the expensiveness while they are travel overseas. That is the main reason why many younger people choose to teach English abroad because they needed money for their daily expensive while they are overseas. Due to its use as a backdrop for countless movies, TV shows and other media, the city of san francisco is well known around the world for its iconic landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz Island, Fisherman’s Wharf, and of course the famous cable car system that has been transporting locals and tourists up and down the city’s exceptionally steep streets for over a hundred years. san francisco’s long history as a multicultural and inclusive city has also led to the growth of its many distinct neighborhoods, each with its own unique style and identity, which makes it one of the most fascinating cities in the whole country to explore by public transport or on foot. Elizaveta Pachina Alumni Experiences The Cambridge English Dictionary defines the word “hindsight” as “the ability to understand an event or situation only after it has happened.” That is why people tell you that “hindsight is a perfect science.” So with the benefit of hindsight and looking back after completing some 220 hours of TEFL training, I see that there are, indeed, several things that I wish that I had known before starting the course, both on the positive and the negative sides. This post was written by our TEFL certification graduate Desmond V. Please note that this blog post might not necessarily represent the beliefs or opinions of ITTT. Let me start with the positives. First and foremost, I wish that I had come across...  [Read more]

Elizaveta Pachina Alumni Experiences A resource I found invaluable for this essay was the website Cyborlink (2019a), a reference provided in the TEFL Young Learners course (ITTT, 2019). The TEFL course (Unit 6) discusses how cultural considerations are important when teaching abroad. This includes cultural sensitivity when interacting with the young learners themselves, as well as in interacting with parents and school staff (administration/teachers). This post was written by our TEFL certification graduate David B. Please note that this blog post might not necessarily represent the beliefs or opinions of ITTT. Cyborlink is aimed at a more general audience of people doing business in other cultures, though of course has implications for TEFL...  [Read more]
