I have tutored esl students for several years. The main area I felt that I needed help with was grammar – especially verbs. I have no trouble knowing which verb and tense to use. But I could not name all the tenses or explain exactly how each one is formed. I really don't think I was ever taught the names (other than present, past and future) in school. I just knew what sounded correct. So going through the units on the verbs was very helpful to me. I feel that I am much better equipped to teach and trouble-shoot my students' difficulties with verbs.
As you know, I was a classroom teacher for many years. But I have to say that the units on teaching methods and techniques were very helpful – great ideas for making the classes interesting and fun as well as instructive. And as much as I hated doing them, having to do all those lesson plans was very good exercise for me. Lesson planning is crucial to teaching a class as well as when tutoring individuals.
I now feel that I can market myself as an “official” esl teacher.
