We feel that this ITTT course has benefited us in several ways and will most certainly assist in our future endeavors to teach english as a second language. The objective of the course was to prepare us to work as english teachers in a society where the demand for english language skills is ever growing. We learned how to manage a variety of classroom scenarios effectively, how to create interesting and meaningful lesson plans, about the nature and scope of general and applied linguistics. We also learned how to evaluate and test students according to their level of english, the differences in teaching various age groups and backgrounds, how to access numerous links to online resources for teaching english as well as the structures and functions
of english. For example, several units throughout the course covered fundamental elements of english, such as; grammar structures, the forms and functions of tenses, verb phrases, stress and intonation, modals, passive and active voice, direct and indirect speech, receptive and productive skills, and so on. These lessons included detailed questions, which required that we revise and recap the various ingredients of english grammatical structure and the nuances of teaching these to esl students. Equipped with this knowledge and the materials from the twenty units covered, we feel that we have more confidence and motivation to teach english in virtually any situation and environment. Having completed several lesson plans based on imaginary scenarios and preconceived problems, we are now even more determined to overcome potential obstacles
that may arise in the ‘real world’ classroom. Merely being a native english speaker does not automatically qualify one to be effective in teaching english as a language. However, armed with this tefl online course certificate and helpful advice from our online tutor, we plan to use the resources provided and implement the wide array of activities highlighted, adapting them to our class and referring back to the detailed grammar notes as the need arises.
