I have been teaching chinese in japan for more than one year. And in my town chinese had been taught for four years already before I took over it. I found that the two teachers before me they didn't make students to write anything in chinese. Although the chinese character is similar with japanese Kanji but different they didn't make students to realize where is different. However I found they like to know how to write in chinese and some of them told me it was easy to remember the pronunciation when they knew how to write it.
