Games in the Classroom (57) Games are an essential part of any second language course. They are a great way to introduce new topics and get the students thinking about and using the language. They create diversity in the classroom and encourage the students to interact with each other. Games are also a great way to increase student-student talk time. As Angkana Deesri states in her article, "Games in the esl and efl Class, "The main focus of using games in class is to help students learn and have fun" (1). Indeed, games are crucial to in the esl classroom no matter what age or culture. However, there are some things that a teacher must consider when wanting to incorporate games into the lesson plan. For example, it is vital that the teacher clearly explains the rules and expectations of the game. Having a prepared example or giving a demonstration is always a good idea when introducing a new game. The students should feel comfortable and confident in the game. The more confident they feel, they more they will be willing to play and, consequently, the more they will learn. The teacher must also be aware of which game he/she is going to chose for the class. The teacher should be conscious of wether or not the game is at the level of the students, whether or not there are enough students to make the game work, how much time the game will require, and the "students' characteristics: whether they are old or young, serious-minded or light-hearted, and highly motivated to learn or not" (Deesri, 2). It is also necessary that the the teacher is comfortable with the game and knows exactly what the rules are and how to play. Another aspect that teachers must consider when choosing a game for a class is if the game relates to the concepts that the class is learning. Being able to connect the game to whatever is being learned at the time is crucial to making the game seem "worth it" to the students and to the overall progression of the course. Since learning a new language can be quite stressful, incorporating games "can help lower (the students') anxiety, make them feel comfortable, and want to learn more" (Deesri, 3). Games not only help the students interact but they also keep the students at ease when learning difficult concepts. Games aid to increase the students' confidence in the language they are learning. They are a practical, easy, and fun way to get the students using english. teachers of english as a second language course should not shy away from using games as a way to explain concepts and get the students talking in english. Games help to increase the rapport of both the student-teacher relationship and the student-student relationship. They force the students to interact with each other while at the same time have fun with learning the language. When used in the right manner and at the right time games are a valuable tool for any tesol teacher. Incorporating games into a lesson can make the lesson fun and memorable thereby succeeding in the overall goal of an english as a second language course: having the students gain confidence using english.
