The
english language is one of the most widely known and widely spoken languages in the world today this is mainly due to colonization when Britain owned 1/3 of the worlds land mass and spread the
english language to every corner of the empire.
english has also become popular because over the years America has become a super power and is also one of the most if not the most influential country in the world.
english is often called a universal language as well as a global language because it influences every aspect of modern day life either directly or indirectly and is used in every country some more than others, this means as an
english speaking tourist no matter the country one can always find someone who can speak
english and for this reason many more people want to learn the language and there is a ever growing demand for good
english teachers. Global trade is normally conducted in
english or uses
english mediators. Because of this need to speak
english in the
business environment parents often want their
children to learn
english which will hopefully give them the edge one day when they have a job and a career. It is for this same reason that some adults will decide to learn
english but money and busyness are not the only motivations for learners some people may want to travel to an
english speaking country and be able to communicate with the people that live there or simply get around without getting lost.
In modern times time is money and people don't like wasting time they want everything right now and they want it done right. Different languages cause confusion and misunderstandings therefore to become more efficient we need a global language and that language is
english. The key to any languages' success as a global language is its ability to adapt if it can't serve the needs of everyone in every country then it won't last and soon it will be replaced by a language that can change and adapt to every possible need/situation,
english has done this.
The internet an essential element to modern-day life connecting people from different countries and continents bringing the world into your home, email e-commerce these are all tools used for conducting good
business. This is the electronic revolution and
english is the fuel that makes it all possible and making information easily accessible to anyone and about anything. But what good is all this if people are still all speaking their mother tongue
Some disadvantages of globalization and any global language is that slowly it destroys other native languages that can't compete and this is also true of
english. As an example let us use Africa but more specifically South Africa (my home country). In South Africa there are 11 official languages including
english. Recently
english has taken huge leaps and is now South Africa's most widely spoken language, this would not be a problem but the other 10 languages are becoming less popular and slowly dying out.
In many languages there are different versions of the language these are called dialects these are mostly understood by the general population that speak the language but in some extreme cases the dialects are almost entirely new languages, this is not good for a global language as some people can't understand the dialects, and so this can't be a global language.
english does not have any dialects although depending on the region one is in accents/colloquialisms may be very different and these too can be difficult to understand but with a bit of practice one can adapt to it and so one can say that the colloquialisms are still understood by the general population.
In conclusion any language can become a global language provided it can cater to meet the needs of the masses.
english is a global language although it has many regional colloquialisms. Today
english is spoken in every country on earth and for this reason more and more people want to and need to learn how to speak it and that increases the need for
teachers.
