I have tutored english in the past, one-on-one with middle and high school age students and adults while I was living in france. I felt like I had a pretty good grasp of english grammar from raising 4 children and helping them through their schooling. But I had no idea how to teach a class of students, or how to prepare lessons. I had no concept of the different stages that make up a good lesson plan. I had no idea what made a good teacher. Watching the video recording of the good and bad teacher in Unit 10 was astounding. I will watch it again and again. I had no idea what a difference good tefl training (and years of experience) can make in teaching abilities. teacher attitude, being an encourager, well planned lessons, good props/ teaching aids, are just a few of the myriad of ideas and invaluable advice this course offers. This course has been eye opening to me about what it takes to be a good tefl teacher. I have just recently moved back to france and am teaching a class for the first time. (It is a volunteer job for the moment, lower intermediate level.) In the past, I thought any Anglophone could teach an english class. Now I know better. I am so grateful for the training this course has given me. I am already putting so much of what I have been taught into my lesson planning. I am sure I will learn a lot by trial and error, but I have my class notes and unit worksheets to fall back on to help me. I desire to become a good teacher. I want to take joy and satisfaction in helping my students to speak better english.
