There have been two broad improvements that this course has made to my ability to teach english. Firstly, I have gained a comprehensive overview of basic english grammar. Although, as a native speaker, I was already proficient in the use of these grammar points, I have learnt how to approach them from a more analytical standpoint. I have learnt a lot about the way grammar should be approached for students of english who have to learn the language systematically and through direct learning, rather than natural language acquisition as native speakers do. The second main improvement is my increased knowledge of tefl teaching methods. Through learning about these topics, I have learnt the theory behind methods I have already experienced in the classroom as well as learning new methods that I can put into practice. Particularly useful hints on games and communication activities that I would struggle to think of ideas for. Some specific points of teaching that I feel this course has significantly increased are the use of communication activities to build up the productive skills of the students and effective classroom management. The course has also helped me to identify areas that I need to work on to avoid making mistakes in the classroom, such as use of the voice and excessive teacher Talking Time.
