Whilst I am a well-educated native english speaker, tefl has re-taught me some basic grammar rules which I had forgotten over time. I think speaking the language become such a habit that I didn't have to rely on grammar rules anymore. Consequently I overlooked them. It is interesting to see the “correct” way to speak, and how it differs sometimes from what you would expect. I am a lot more conscious of how I express myself since taking the course. A lot of the course was common sense to me, but as I had no prior experience of teaching it was useful to see whether or not my instinctive ideas were correct. In some cases, I have learnt new approaches which I might not have considered otherwise. I think if I had tried to teach a class without this background knowledge I would have struggled. The aspects of the course I enjoyed the most were the grammar units and phonology. I liked re-learning the rules and applying them to get a definitive correct answer. This type of unit involved me making my own deductions based on a learned rule and were more interactive and enjoyable than other units, which were slightly memory or opinion based. In September I am travelling to tokyo where I hope to get work in a school, teaching english as a foreign language. This course has enabled me to fulfill this dream and I am incredibly glad that I have given myself this opportunity. I hope to learn japanese when I'm out there and also to explore the city and its architecture for use in my University thesis. I also plan on taking a “young learners” course to supplement my knowledge so far and hopefully to continue teaching and travelling in the future.
