In today's world, teaching English has become a mainstream job, no longer limited to native speakers. Everywhere you go, you will find nationals from various countries teaching English with sometimes rather strong accents. What are their motivations and why would schools choose non-natives to teach English in the first place?

The country uses the English language as an international language for communication and because the majority of the population has a degree of fluency. But not most people from other countries know that English learners from the Philippines are also facing difficulties in learning to speak English. Trying to gain confidence in the classroom is a hurdle that all new teachers must face when first starting. Every teacher I’ve spoken to, tells me about the horror they felt when they stood before their very first classroom full of students. As for myself, I am a teacher in training enrolled in an Elementary Education Bachelors program. In my program, we get a lot of practice creating lesson plans and teaching various subjects to our class. This practice has helped increase my confidence in teaching, but I still remember the first exposure I had teaching to children in an educational environment.

From both my experiences as well as what I have learned from this course, I believe seating arrangement in the classroom is very important. I remember always remember one teacher in college because her class stuck out from all of the others. In her greek history class, we were forced to place our desks into the form of a circle a vast majority of the time. She warned us from the first day of her class that this would be a class far different from the normal teaching style. She told us that this style would help ensure we stay engaged, listen to others as well as her and would help to keep us accountable for our previous reading assignments.

In my classroom, I often hear many of my students saying, "I want to be good at English." At the same time, I am aware that most of them almost lose their motivation for learning English. After studying English hard to pass the entrance examination, they are free from the "obligational" study of English. Now in college, no one in the classroom speaks out that English is unnecessary. On the contrary, they answered that they need to study English because it is a global language. More importantly, the ability to command the language strongly influences the success of their job hunting.

Since I was a teenager, I always loved the language of English and always loved to help my colleagues from school. I remember listening to some kids “I hate English” or “English is so difficult to learn”. I never understood those sentences because English had always been easy for me to deal with. So, in High School I started to help the other students from my class, I used to invite them to my place so I could share my knowledge with them, in that time I didn’t realize, but that was the beginning of my career as a teacher because I was teaching them, I was making them my students.

As an international study major in college, I learned that the United Nations, a non-governmental organization, officially recognizes six world languages: every meeting, written document, and speech are translated into these languages. English is one of them. It is spoken and written by billions of people around the world. Having traveled in eight countries myself, I was surprised to have seen how commonplace it was for countries to translate directional signs in both the official language and in English. A student’s mastery of the English language, or in any language, can be a difficult journey to venture. Therefore, this essay will explore what factors may motivate a student to learn English.

Teaching is not generally a lucrative profession, because in Africa we have strange financial priorities. But there are so many countries out there that make teaching quite a better living particularly teaching the English language as a foreign language. Fully ingrained should one be, call himself or herself an English language teacher and this can not be achieved without education.

My teaching experience began in a whirlwind. I graduated from college a semester ahead of my class, married, lived with my husband in my sister’s basement for two months, and moved to South Korea. It still didn’t fully prepare us for what to expect, how amazing it would be, and how hard.
