This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
Before I started this course, I had two big challenges.
First of all, since english is not my native language, I did not know if my level of english would deem sufficient to be able to teach it myself. Throughout the course, I did learn a bit of new grammar myself, or at least in a different way than I had before. For instance, the part on modals was refreshing for me: I had never seen the use of different modals listed that way. I did realize that indeed my english background should provide me with enough confidence to teach young learners. I do not think, however, that I am the right person to teach english in a business environment, as that feels out of my reach.
Second, I learned a lot on how to teach in general. I think that is the biggest advantage of the course for me. It provided me with a lot of inspiration and ideas to use in a teaching environment, on how to deal with different groups of students, with different characteristics. As I have been studying english myself for over 12 years now, the tefl course is a nice way of ‘going back to basics' and rediscovering the basic structure of the english language. It will definitely help me when having to teach complicated vocabulary or grammar.
When it comes to putting into action what I have learned, I find it difficult to answer to this question. I think it is more about how it changed me as a teacher in general and not on how it will help me in specific situations. I will always keep every piece of advice given in this course in the back of my head and that way it will guide me through situations confronted with in class.
