I decided to move to Korea in 2004 to begin an adventure teaching english. I had no background in education, as my degree is in criminology. However, getting a teaching job in korea and most places overseas does not require one to have an education degree. All that was required was to have a bachelor degree. I really wanted to teach and help others learn my language. This strong desire I had, driven me to leave my family and move across the world. I spent several years teaching without a tesol or tefl certificate. I would always wondered why should I take a course or certificate when one was not needed. After my fifth year in Korea, I decided to enroll in to the ITTT tesol course. I am now finishing my course and I want to tell you why I believe everyone should take a course like this. After taking this course I have learn so many things and it has changed my teaching life. There are so many positive reasons to take a tesol or tefl course, but I will just mention a few so that you may also decided to better yourself and your teaching career. This course has helped me in the following ways: job opportunities, growing as a teacher. builds confidence, and most of all benefits the students and schools. Having a tesol or tefl certificate give you so many opportunities. english is a language that is spreading all over the world and becoming many countries main language to communicate with other countries. This creates lots of job opportunities for native english speakers. It was hard for me to find a good paying job living in canada as there were so many graduates but not enough jobs. After moving to Korea and teaching here for seven years I have seen lots of changes, and now changes with teaching requirements. In some parts of Asia it is required that you have a teaching certificate such as tesol. In Korea there are still many jobs where just a degree and no teaching experience will do, but now most schools and private schools are starting to give benefits to those how have a tesol certificate. Having a tesol certificate will not only give you a chance to travel and work overseas, but it will also give you job security for the future, as countries start to look for teachers who are qualified to teach english to their students. After finishing this course I could now apply and get the jobs that I did not have the requirements for in the past. One of the most important things for myself is personal growth and growing as a teacher. I have some friends who are happy doing the same thing and not learning anything new. They are content with just doing what they are doing. For me I must better my self and learn to make myself a better teacher. Not just for me but also for the students and people around me. The more I know, the more I can help others. This course has helped me grow so much as a teacher. I have learned many things such as teaching methods, classroom management strategies, student leveling, and the list goes on. Before I took this course I learned the things I knew from other teachers and taking their ideas and putting them in the classroom. However, doing this course I received so much more. I can now look at my students and understand what problems they are having and how to help them overcome their difficulties with english. I have become more confident after taking this course. I remember my first class, as if it was yesterday. I was nervous and not sure what I should teach my students or what they understood already. In most schools in Korea the teacher is required to find their own books to teach the students. Of course they expect the english teacher to know what is best. I had no idea what to do with my classes, so I asked for help from the other teachers. However they didn't seem to really know what they where doing as well. If I had taken this course I would have had no worries or problems in class or creating my own curriculum. Now When I go to my class I feel great as I have learned how to create and deliver a good lesson for my students. I am also confident in helping other teachers and my school. This feeling of confidence has made me want to further my studies in education. However now I am married and have two beautiful children and a wonderful wife, so this online course was perfect for me to gain knowledge and better myself as a teacher. After each lesson that I completed I felt great and after finishing this course I feel that I have accomplished a goal that will give me the confidence to help my students, school, and children see me as a good teacher. The last reason I chose was the benefits the students and schools would gain from a teacher who can better their english and workplace. I have always been someone who would be so happy to help others especially my students and co-workers. Sometime I felt ashamed when someone at work or in class would ask me a question relating to english and I didn't have the answer. This feeling was something that I truly wanted to fix. I was proud to be from canada, and I want to have a good name as a person. I want to have people know that I am truthful and honest. I would tell them I am sorry I don't now the answer to your english question. In Korea, teachers are treated with great respect and the students think the teacher knows everything. It is hard for them to understand that I don't know everything but I am working to learn more so I can prepare for future question that students or workers might need help with. This course has given me lots of information in all areas related to teaching english that I can use as a reference at anytime. In Korea most schools or public schools have only one english teacher so it is important that we can provide the help them need to learn our language and better their english ability or the english courses that the school may have. I think every teacher should take a tesol course as it does help you and your students. whether you choose to take or not to take a course before you start your teaching adventure overseas, is entirely up to the reader. However, I hope that who ever reads this article has understood how taking a course like the tesol has change my teaching life and will change theirs as well. It has given me job opportunities, growth as a teacher. confidence, and most of all benefits for my students and school.
