english is not my native language. Getting an exposure to the language and opportunity to it into practice is very necessary. The method “grammar - translation†is still the main way when I learn english and I teach chinese. Presentation practice and production is the most method I use in class .As mentioned in the article this method is effective in teaching simple language at lower levels. But it easy for a lesson to become a teacher- centered lesson. I am teaching chinese in japan. Since my japanese is fluent enough to communicating with my students I always use japanese to explain chinese. After I read the method-- the silent way -- I realized I a kind of grabbing their opportunity to learn chinese by themselves. I think the silent way is effective for both lower-level and higher-level learners. I am planning to make a set of color rules and give my students hint by using these colors.
