I find the phonetic alphabet fascinating! It's interesting to me how we can naturally understand and execute proper pronunciation without ever having learned the phonetic alphabet. It is so much clearer to me how complex proper pronunciation actually is after seeing all the nuances of it in this less. When I was in high school I took french and found that I was quite good at pronunciation. It strikes me that some people may just have a more natural aptitude for learning pronunciation by listening to the teacher speak the words.
