With the population of the planet nearing seven billion, life on Earth is becoming increasingly confined. People from different nationalities need to communicate with each other and work together on a global scale. Technology, including the Internet, has advanced phenomenally. As a result, global communication and travel has become more affordable and convenient thus international business has also flourished. How can seven billion people from 126 (or so) countries, speaking approximately 6500 different languages, find a way to communicate? The answer is simple - english. At some point in time, this was decided and it shows no signs of change. Perhaps it is due to the fact that is english is spoken as a first language by so many different nations such as New Zealand, australia, ireland, The United Kingdom, canada and America. Despite this, the total number of native speakers of english is actually the third highest in the world. Mandarin chinese takes first place followed by spanish at second. However, english is more commonly spoken as a second language than any other language in the world. It seems that people from all different nationalities accept english as the language of the globe. As a native speaker of english, I have personally found this to be an advantage when traveling in foreign countries where I don't speak the language. I am lucky enough to be able to try speaking to someone in my own language and I just might be able to communicate! english is essential for traveling the globe. Lets take Europe for example. An average tourist might want to travel to several different countries within a few weeks such as spain, france, Germany and italy. If you were a Korean tourist, imagine trying to brush up on your spanish, french, German and italian before you went on your three-week holiday! Then you might return to Korea, and never speak those four languages again! Perhaps the average Korean tourist taking a three-week holiday in Europe might prepare by brushing up on their english. Even though english is not a native language for any of those countries, it may be used in all of them. You will most probably find english signs at airports, train stations etc. And english is likely to be spoken at hotels and shops/companies designed for tourists. The world has become more accessible due to advancements in transportation technology. But technology has also brought the world to our very own homes via the Internet. The modern world is online. Traveling itself is made much easier by using the Internet to make online bookings for accommodation, tickets, tourist-deals etc. english is the dominant language used in these situations. Global international business has benefitted from the way that the Internet has opened up communication around the world, english being that language of communication. World news and important information concerning the globe is spread around the Internet, predominantly in english. english is also an official language of many world organizations including the European Union and the United Nations. In short, understanding english helps you to keep up with and succeed in the world around you. This modern technology-ridden society is filled to the brim with international exchange happening everyday through travel, business and use of the Internet. The globe needs a universal language with which to communicate. That language is english.
