Motivating students (70) Trying to motivate a young group of teens can pose a serious problem for any teacher especially one trying to teach english as a second language. I was once a coach of a high school football team for a few years. That was when I got my first experience of dealing with a group of teenage children and it was a shock to see how they can be so unmotivated even seeing what the end result could be (winning a game). There were a few things I did that can't be done in a classroom like sprints and drills to keep them motivated and focused. I have some examples though that can be brought into the classroom as stated in the units of this course and the article I have read about dealing with teens. One thing I did to try and get them motivated was to show them that through hard work and determination the end result could playoffs and a possibility of making the championship match. Also, being football players I knew that they would be interested and following along with different leagues throughout the world. So, I incorporated this into my practices to get the boys more involved throughout the practice. They were able to choose what team, club or international, to be and could have teams of five. Whichever team has the most points at the end of the practice week will be the team captains for the following weeks games. I felt like incorporating something they enjoyed outside of practice and brought it onto the field the boys would have another reason for elevating there level of play. It worked out great the practices were more intense and the level of play pick up on the pitch during game time. This is nothing new it was just a good feeling when I was going through these units and this was one of the stimulants used to reach any group of students. The article has many ideas as well; using pop culture as material, friendly competition, cater to their skills and exploit their talents, use pen pals to motivate writing, make reading age appropriate, play songs to improve listening, have video lessons, incorporate technology into the classroom, play games and use real life objects for material. By understanding what culture and the level of class you have all of these ideas are suitable for the classroom. Establishing a good rapport with the students is a big key in getting the students involved from the beginning. Once that is established then the previous ideas will fall into place. Using pen pals was one of my favorite things when I was younger. It will progress their reading and writing of the english language and create a friendship outside of the classroom. Giving the students a goal to work for at the end of class, week, and semester will put forth a little friendly competition between the students for extra motivation. I will introduce music from where I am from and incorporate it into lessons for the class. By using the information from the units and this article I will give my best effort to keep the motivation level high during class. With all these different ideas available, there are sure to be instances arise that a teacher is not prepared for. I feel like if I keep my wits about myself and handle the situation the best way I know how it will not be a disturbance to the class. I will also refer back to similar materials and ask fellow teachers ways they motivate their students. I am anxious to begin as teaching and helping students around the world.
