Urban education can be described as a complicated topic for school reformists in America. With critical issues, such as inadequate funding, lack of resources, and uncertified teachers, the myriad of problems with public education has reached a new high. Many big-city public education systems have turned into melting pots by bringing together members of different racial, social, economic, and ethnic groups.

I believe that peer learning can be very helpful in English as a Second Language classroom. I believe that as a language learner there is nothing more helpful than learning from people around you. I have found that humans are very social beings just by the nature of being human. I believe that we learn best by interacting with people and that this translates especially when learning other languages. I think that it is very beneficial for students at any level to learn from each other to build their skills in every way. I think that having students talk to each other is important for improving verbal communication and that having peers correct each other’s papers is a great way to help all students involved in... Upon completion of my TESOL course, the best thing I have learned is actually plural and not limited to one item. Most importantly a TESOL instructor needs to be able to reach all students with varying needs, styles and preferences of learning in order to ensure the highest degree of probability that his or her students learn English, while keeping all students in the class as engaged as possible at all times.

For this reason, I have developed an ongoing list of strategies and techniques that I have learned that will hopefully reach all learners using visual, audio, tactile and kinesthetic materials and approaches which include: responsive, collaborative... [Read more]

Being an American living in France has given me firsthand experience as to what it is like to struggle with learning a new language. I studied Spanish for six years, in Junior High and High school. Language acquisition was easier then. I can attest to the fact that younger learners learn more quickly. For me, the two major problems with learning French are the tenses and not being able to understand what people are saying. I get stuck in the present tense, often forgetting to change tenses in conversation. I also need to hone up on my listening skills.

An educator by definition is a person who provides instruction and/or education. In my own personal experience, educators in my life have not always been individuals that have gained their qualifications via professional schooling, but also by training or from their own experiences. This has transcended into what I believe an educator truly is.
My first experience with teaching began at the tender age of thirteen at my dance school.... [Read more]

One of the most useful decisions that a teacher can make is the choice to know his or her limitations. Realizing one's shortcomings does not excuse an instructor from conveying the lesson. Instead, this determination means that a teacher needs to employ supporting tools to help reach the students. One such possibility is the use of teaching aids.

Teaching aids can provide an educator with an active choice for classroom lecturing. When used correctly, an instructor can use teaching aids to stimulate, engage, and develop a lesson plan in a way that he... [Read more]

J. K. Rowling once said: "All a writer needs is talent and ink." I agree. But she might have forgotten a crucial factor that made Harry Potter forever etched in our mind ---imagination. It is always said that writing is natural, so a good writer is someone who can write without conscious effort.

A real writer, however, will tell you things are just the other way around. There can be no doubt that a good writer endlessly seeks perfection in words. Not until they mirror the thoughts in their brain does the process stop. From a pedagogical perspective,... [Read more]

The number one question I had to answer before deciding to start Practical English Teacher was “Do I want a new boss or to be my own boss?”. I spent months asking myself this before I finally decided to do it. There’s a lot of security and credibility that comes with working for a larger ESL company. And I’m not knocking anyone who wants to do that but if you’re like me and you’re looking for some advice on where to start with your own ESL Service, let’s talk.
First and I would say most importantly, ask yourself, what is your teaching style? What is your expertise and how can you use that? People tend to say “I just don’t have a business mind” well then, what... [Read more]
