I have personally gained a lot from this course. First of all, it has been a good review of grammar that I have not really done since elementary school and middle school. While I studied more complex grammar points more recently, it is always helpful to go back and review the foundational building blocks. I have never learned phonology before, so I really appreciated that. I think I will find it helpful in dictionary use as well as helping me to understand areas of pronunciation my students struggle with. I will be better able to understand and address their pronunciation problems. It is clear then that this course has helped me to better understand the english language and how it is constructed and produced. While I have been teaching music, theater, martial arts and tutoring spanish for almost a decade, I have never been ‘taught' to teach except through what I learned watching my own teachers and then through trial and error. I really appreciated learning about the different teaching theories and I can see where my own teachers employed different aspects of some of those theories. Also, the ideas of classroom management have reinforced what I have figured out through trial and error and I wish that someone told me when I first started teaching. The same goes for the various teaching theories, lesson-planning ideas and teaching ideas, and information about the various levels and kinds of students. I plan on putting what I have learned into action by creating formal lesson plans (I never have before) and implementing many of the teaching ideas and games. I have already experimented with some of the ideas on classroom management and teaching theories in my martial arts classes. I appreciate that a lot of the information from this course can be applied to more than just language classes. I am excited to continue to apply what I have learned in this course in not only teaching english, but also in the other areas I teach and tutor. I have no doubt that by applying what I have learned I will become a better teacher. This information will also make me a better student and I am excited to continue my own language learning and learning in general. I have not taught english before, so I am excited to try my hand at it starting at the end of this month. I am going to Northern Montana (united states) to tutor the children of the migrant cherry pickers (Hispanic). I do not know yet what resources we will have available, but I do know that it will be limited, as we will be teaching outside in the cherry orchards since we cannot remove the kids from their parents. After the cherry harvest, I am planning on going to teach english in South Korea though I may also be offered a job in indonesia. Needless to say, I will have plenty of opportunity to use what I have learned in this course.
